What pan-ExM lets you see.

Expanded, pan-stained tissue and the 3D reconstructions built from it, from brain to kidney. Select any image to see it larger.

3D reconstruction. Neurons segmented from a block of pan-stained tissue, each in its own color. Segmentation powered by WEBKNOSSOS, co-developed with Scalable Minds.
3D reconstruction. A flight through a reconstructed block of brain tissue, every cell and neurite in its own color.
3D reconstruction. Dendrites traced in 3D, down to their individual spines.
3D reconstruction. Reconstructed neurons rising out of the pan-stained volume they were traced from.
3D reconstruction. A densely segmented slab of brain tissue, seen from every side.
Scale. A tissue section after expansion, now large enough to hold with both hands.
Fruit fly. The synaptic protein Bruchpilot (BRP) in green over the pan-stain, in fly brain.
Brain. An amyloid plaque in 3D, with Aβ, ATP6V0A1, and the surrounding tissue in four colors.
Brain. Microglia (IBA1) branching through pan-stained tissue.
Brain. Astrocytes (GFAP) within a block of expanded tissue.
Brain. Neurofilaments (NF-H) tracing axons through the pan-stain.
Cell. The Golgi apparatus (GM130) inside a single cell.
Cell. Nuclei (histone H3) within a block of expanded tissue.
Brain. Two synapses, each with its presynaptic and postsynaptic markers.
Cell. Mitochondria (MitoSpy), the pan-stain, and the merge.
Brain. Inhibitory (VGAT) and excitatory (VGLUT2) synapses in pan-stained tissue.
Brain. Myelin basic protein (MBP) along axon tracts.
Brain. Two molecular labels in teal and red over the gray pan-stain, in the same sample.
Brain. A Calbindin+ Purkinje cell within its local circuit.
Brain. Amyloid plaque ultrastructure, with Aβ labeling over the pan-stain.
Brain. A single synapse, with molecular markers located within its structure.
Kidney. Podocin at the filtration barrier.
Epithelium. ZO-1 tight junctions outlining every cell.
Epithelium. PARD3, E-cadherin, and DAPI over the pan-stain.
Brain. A labeled target in red over the pan-stain.
Brain. Myelin structure registered to pan-stained tissue architecture.
